Output quality

The conversion is done by the same layout engine that opens the document, so the PDF is produced the way printing from a word processor would produce it — not by screenshotting pages. Text stays as real text: selectable, searchable, and readable by screen readers, with the document structure preserved. Embedded images keep their original resolution and are not re-encoded. Fonts embedded in the document are embedded in the PDF; fonts that are only referenced fall back to a metric-compatible substitute, which is why the Liberation family is installed here and why line breaks land where Word put them. The honest limit is that anything relying on a Microsoft-only feature — certain SmartArt shapes, some ActiveX controls, macros — either renders approximately or not at all, because those are not part of the document format so much as part of Word.

Troubleshooting

The PDF has more pages than the Word document
Almost always a font the document uses but does not embed. Embed the fonts in Word (File → Options → Save → Embed fonts in the file) and convert again, or switch the document to a common font like Arial or Calibri.
A chart or diagram came out blank
This happens with SmartArt and some linked objects, which are stored as instructions for Word rather than as a picture. Right-click it in Word, copy, and paste it back as an image, then convert.
The conversion failed with no clear reason
A file that Word itself repairs on opening will usually fail here. Open it in Word, accept the repair, save a fresh copy, and convert that one.

  • Will the layout actually survive?

    Yes, and this is the part that usually goes wrong elsewhere. We install the Liberation font family, which matches the exact character widths of Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New. Most Linux conversion servers skip this and substitute a font that looks similar but is a different width — so lines wrap in new places, tables split, and your three-page document comes out four pages long. That does not happen here.

  • Is my document uploaded to your server?

    Yes, and this is different from our other PDF tools. Merge, split, compress and the rest run entirely inside your browser and never send anything. This one cannot: the conversion engine is a one-gigabyte install, which is not something anyone should download to convert one file. Your document is stored under a random name, is never opened by a person, and is deleted automatically within 24 hours.

  • What about tracked changes and comments?

    Tracked changes are rendered as they appear in the document — if the file is set to show markup, the markup lands in the PDF. Accept or reject the changes in Word first if you want a clean copy. Comments in the margin are not carried into the PDF.

  • Which formats can I upload?

    Modern Word (.docx), OpenDocument text (.odt) and rich text (.rtf). The old binary .doc format from Word 97–2003 is not accepted yet, and the reason is worth stating: we identify files by their contents rather than their name, and .doc shares a byte-for-byte identical signature with old .xls and .ppt files. Rather than guess and risk handing you a PDF full of garbage, we decline it. Open the file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.

  • Can I convert several documents at once?

    Yes — drop in a batch and take the results as a ZIP. They convert one at a time rather than in parallel, so ten documents take roughly ten times one document, not the same time.

  • What happens to the images I upload in a batch?

    Files up to 50 MB are accepted, and a batch is handled as separate jobs that are zipped together at the end. Every upload is stored under a random name, never served from a public folder, and deleted 24 hours after the job starts — the finished file goes at the same moment. We never share them and there is no account they could be tied to. The one thing we do is compare the original against the result in our own admin area, to be sure the compression has not softened the picture.
