Why your phone videos play sideways, and how to fix it properly

You film something in portrait. It looks right on your phone. You send it to a friend or upload it somewhere, and suddenly everyone is tilting their head.

What is really in the file

Phone camera sensors have a fixed orientation. Rather than rotating every frame as it records — which costs processing power and battery — the phone stores the picture the way the sensor saw it and writes a small note in the file: "display this rotated 90 degrees".

Your phone gallery reads that note. So do most modern video players. But plenty of software does not: older desktop players, some upload forms, a lot of video editors, and a surprising number of social platforms during processing.

Why the usual fixes do not stick

Rotating in a phone gallery app often just updates the same flag rather than the picture. The file looks correct to you, and still arrives sideways for anyone whose software ignores flags. You have not changed anything that travels.

The fix that travels with the file

Rotate the pixels themselves and clear the flag at the same time. Then there is no ambiguity left for any player to get wrong — the first frame is simply the right way up.

Rotating versus flipping

• Rotate 90° clockwise or anticlockwise: for footage filmed with the phone on its side.
• Rotate 180°: for footage filmed upside down, which happens more often than you would think with tripods.
• Flip horizontally: mirrors the picture. Useful for front-camera footage where text reads backwards.

Flipping is not the same as rotating, and it is the one people reach for by mistake. If text in your video is readable but the video is sideways, you want rotate. If text is backwards, you want flip.
