Convert GIF to MP4
The conversion that almost always wins. GIF stores every frame as a separate 256-colour picture; MP4 compresses across time and keeps full colour, so the same animation typically ends up a fraction of the size and looks better.

Output quality
Encoded with H.264 at CRF 23 in yuv420p, the combination that plays in every browser and on both phone platforms. There is no audio track because a GIF has none. Frame rate is pinned to 15 by default: GIF has no fixed frame rate of its own, and without a stated one different players guess differently and the animation runs at different speeds for different people. Odd dimensions are trimmed by a single pixel because yuv420p requires even ones.

Common use cases
A GIF too large to send or upload
A few seconds of animation can run to tens of megabytes as a GIF. The same clip as MP4 usually fits comfortably under any limit.
Replacing GIFs on a web page
Animated GIFs are often the heaviest thing on a page. Swapping them for looping muted video is one of the largest performance wins available.
Getting a GIF into a video editor
Most editors will not import GIF, or import it badly. MP4 drops straight onto a timeline.
Troubleshooting
- The video plays faster or slower than the GIF did
- GIF sets a delay per frame and those delays can vary within one file, while MP4 needs one constant rate. The default of 15 frames per second suits most animations; a very slow GIF can look sped up.
- It will not autoplay on my page
- Browsers only autoplay video that is muted. Add the muted attribute alongside loop, autoplay and playsinline, and it behaves exactly as the GIF did.
- The file was rejected as too large
- The ceiling is 200 MB. A GIF that big is unusual — if it is a converted video, going back to the original source and using Compress Video will give a much better result.

Privacy and file deletion
- Stored under a random nameUploads have no connection to the file name you sent and are never served from a public directory. This tool accepts files up to 200 MB.
- Deleted on a timerUploads are removed within 2 hours and finished results within 24 hours, whichever comes first.
- Nobody looks at themNo one browses uploads, nothing is shared with third parties, and no file is used to train anything. The only thing kept past deletion is the size and timing of the job.
- Encrypted in transitEvery request runs over HTTPS, so the file is encrypted between your device and our server.

Frequently asked questions
Browse video toolsHow much smaller will the MP4 be?
Usually ten to fifty times smaller, and occasionally more. The saving comes from compression across time: MP4 stores what changed between frames, while GIF stores every frame in full. The more static the background, the larger the gap.
Will it still loop and autoplay?
On a web page, yes — a video element with muted, loop and autoplay behaves exactly like a GIF and is what most sites now use in their place. In a chat app it depends on the app; some still want an actual GIF.
Does the quality improve?
Usually. GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which is what causes the banding you see in gradients and skin tones. MP4 has no such limit, so the conversion can only recover what the GIF still holds, but nothing further is thrown away.
Why did the dimensions change by one pixel?
MP4 playback is universal only in a colour format that requires both dimensions to be even numbers. A GIF with an odd width or height loses a single row or column so the file plays everywhere rather than in some players only.
How long does my video stay on your server?
Your upload is deleted within 2 hours and the finished file within 24, whichever comes first. Video sits there slightly longer than an image would, simply because encoding takes longer — this tool accepts files up to 200 mb and 10 minutes long. Nothing is watched, inspected or shared, and there is no account for it to be attached to.
About these formats
- GIFGIF is a lossless image format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, with frame-based animation and one-bit transparency — obsolete for still images, still universal for short looping clips..
- MP4MP4 is a container format, not a codec: it wraps video (usually H.264), audio (usually AAC) and metadata in one file, and it is the closest thing to a universally playable video file..
