- What is an AVIF file?
- AVIF stores a still image using AV1, the same compression used for video. It typically beats both JPG and WebP on size at equal quality, which is why sites are adopting it — and why you increasingly find one in your downloads folder that will not open.
- Why is my JPG bigger than the AVIF was?
- Because AVIF compresses far better. Going back to JPG at a quality that preserves what you see will usually double or triple the file size. That is the cost of universal compatibility.
- Why does this conversion take longer?
- AVIF decoding is genuinely expensive — considerably more CPU work than JPG or PNG. A large AVIF can take a few seconds rather than a fraction of one.
- Do you keep my files?
- No. Files are stored on our server only while the conversion runs. Uploads are deleted within 2 hours and finished downloads within 24 hours, whichever comes first. We never open, inspect or share them.
